Outline

Title: Gen eds should be taken away from the University of Iowa
Purpose Statement: Persuade my audience that general education requirements should not be required to graduate college
Thesis: College students are not benefiting from gen eds

Intro: College is a time in an individuals life where they are making their own choices and starting to become adults. To get to this point in their academic careers, students have gone through roughly 12 years of schooling. this has developed them into well-educated individuals before heading off to college. Also, college is very costly. Students should be able to decide what they spend their money on.

Body 1: Gen eds waste time and money

  • 37 credits required for gen eds
  • Getting rid of them could reduce college costs
  • Cost a lot of extra money for unrelated courses
Body 2: They are mostly unrelated to the students major or career
  • Science majors taking art or history classes
Body 3: College kids have been taking similar classes all their lives
  • Grade school and high school have required classes similar to gen eds.
  • Should have a choice if they want to take them or not
Conclusion: Although on paper gen eds sound like a good idea, it is actually costing students a lot of time and money. The classes they are required to take are mostly no use to them in their careers. They have also taken many similar classes in high school, even grade school.

Solution: Colleges should not require students to take gen eds

  • Have more major related courses
  • Make them optional
Justification:

  • Some students may not have taken them in high school
    • That is why they should be optional so those kids can take the courses
  • Some of these classes may benefit students in their careers even though it may not seem like it.
    • Even if some courses may benefit students career, the majority most likely won't so the students should decide if they want to take a certain gen ed or not.
  • The lack of courses in college may make students less knowledgeable.
    • Colleges should require more related courses in their field which could actually make them a better professional in their career.
  • What about students without a major?
    • Give them a schedule with a wide variety of courses to help them figure out what they want to do
Comments:
  • Some gen eds may be affecting GPA because students may be pushing gen eds in the back to do good in their major classes.

Topic Proposal

Every college student enrolled in a university is required to take courses called "gen eds." These are general education courses. Students are required to take these classes to become a well-rounded individual; however, these classes may be looked at as a waste of time and money. These courses are very similar to ones taken in high school, so why would students have to take them again? I propose that gen ed requirements should be taken out of college degree requirements. I believe this because students could be using their time and money to take more classes to prepare them for their career.

Speech 2

After reading the speech outline, I believe this speech is going to be proposing how to fix a problem. This problem can be anything such as parking at the university. After we introduce the problem, we are going to start talking about how we can start to resolve the issue. Instead of saying many different types of solutions, talk about the main argument for how to change the problem. The argument for change we propose has to has strong evidence. One question I have is should the visual have some sort of statistics?

IMRaD reflections

Ellie's paper: I talked about her in-text citations and that she should explain them a little more. I believe some of my citations aren't explained much either which is something I can change.

Anna's paper: After analyzing Anna's paper, I went back and made sure I cited all of my sources. I also went back and fixed my subheadings. Those are some things I commented on her paper, which also made me double check and fix mine.

Immediately after just one session of physical activity, children can increase their attention and memory, and reduce inappropriate behavior, such as being unfocused and causing others to become distracted
Students that were involved in 20 minutes of exercise showed more brain activity than the students that didn't exercise

Children assigned to exercise showed increased bilateral prefrontal cortex activity
Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies performed in the Americas, Europe, and Australia provide clear evidence for the association of inactivity and obesity with poorer academic performance
Statewide studies have found a positive relationship between FitnessGram® (a fitness assessment and reporting program for youth) scores and performance on academic achievement tests.

When physical activity is used as a break from academic learning time, post engagement effects include better attention

Overall, a rapidly growing body of work suggests that time spent engaged in physical activity is related not only to a healthier body but also to a healthier mind
physically active and aerobically fit children consistently outperform their inactive and unfit peers academically on both a short- and a long-term basis.

Paper Topic

The topic I am proposing is if physical activity affects academic success. I decided to choose this topic because it is relatable to many college students. If doing physical activity affects academic success, then many students could benefit from this finding. Some questions include: How many hours of physical activity do you do a week? What is your GPA range? I plan on making a poll to get individuals information on the topic. I also plan on interviewing individuals.

IMRaD is a form of writing that is used during scientific and technical reports. This format talks about why and how you did the things you did to get your results. In previous classes, we have usually just looked at the results and wrote our report based on those findings. We would look up a topic and then search for points that we can back up and argue. Also, the IMRaD format uses section and tables in the writings. Previous research papers have a flowing format to it and usually contain no visuals. Whereas the IMRaD is all about displaying its findings in tables. Another aspect that is different is the methods section. When writing using IMRaD, the author talks about the steps they took to get their findings. In past writings, there have been no sections for writing methods because we just research the facts and not follow a specific method of research.

Outline

This Doritos commercial was released during the 2016 Super Bowl. The purpose of this ad was for Doritos to use humor to promote brand recognition. The goal from brand recognition is to increase their sales or to get being talking about them. The super bowl is a huge event for companies to show an ad because of the crazy amount of people that tune in. The 2016 super bowl had 115.5 million people tune in at its peak. That's a lot of people to display an ad to.

The ad uses many different types of humor throughout the commercial.

Actors Expressions: The wife and doctor are really joyful about the ultrasound while the man almost looks like he isn't paying attention. The ultrasound is an incredible part of pregnancy and the man seems to be more focused on the Doritos. Also, the man is laughing while moving the Dorito.

Visual of Baby: The man notices the baby reaching for the Doritos and starts moving the Dorito in different directions. The baby follows the Dorito every it goes, even bouncing into the woman when the man jolts the Dorito up.

Crazy Ending: The woman has enough of the messing around so she throws the Dorito across the room. The audience can make an assumption of what is gonna happen next, based on the baby following the Dorito everywhere it went. The ad gives a hint of what is going to happen as there is a moment of silence after the woman throws the Dorito and everyone in the room looks at each other with worried expressions. The baby jumping out of the womb is ironic because giving birth is normally a long process with a lot of pushing involved, and the baby is born just by trying to get the Dorito.

Along with humor, Doritos tries to show the audience how good their product is. The fact that an unborn baby wants to get a Dorito so bad that it ultimately jumps out the womb shows the product must be great.

I believe the ad was very effective because it made a very humorous commercial to get the audience familiar with the brand. This ad was the most shared commercial in the 2016 Super Bowl, so it definitely had an impact on brand recognition.

Commercial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W5xxvCPz7g

The commercial I decided to use was a Doritos commercial. I decided to do this commercial because I enjoy the humor of the commercials Doritos make. The commercial is set at a hospital where a woman is getting an ultrasound. Her husband is eating a bag of Doritos while the ultrasound is taking place. Through the ultrasound screen, the baby is seen reaching for the Doritos. The father moves the Dorito up and down, and the baby follows the chip. At the end of the commercial, the mother takes the chip and throws it. The baby is then seen kidding out of the mother to go get the Dorito. Mostly everyone, besides children, understands what an ultrasound is so the commercial is able to be interpreted by a wide variety of people. Doritos uses humor in the commercial to make the audience laugh. Making the audience laugh helps with brand recognition. The purpose of the commercial, I believe, is just for brand recognition. The humor of the commercial allows people to remember it better because it made them laugh. In addition to recognition, Doritos is trying to show how good their chips are. They are trying to show that their chips are so good, that an unborn baby is wanting to leave the womb to get one.

Paper Sources

1)  https://ac-els-cdn-com.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/S0889540618302981/1-s2.0-S0889540618302981-main.pdf?_tid=b28daed3-e8ad-4a28-bb7b-24fa1c308170&acdnat=1535477121_afca4f8beabb44a9c3fce73bce1ceae5

This first source is an academic writing. It is a lab report style writing that tested a hypothesis over a period of time. This source has very formal writing, which is intended for readers in this field of study. I will use this writing to demonstrate the amount of time put into a lab report in this field.

2)  https://search-proquest-com.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/docview/222606170/fulltextPDF/6003E66E8C35447BPQ/1?accountid=14663

My second source would be considered a non-academic writing. It is a journal writing about the changes in dentistry. The writing is informal so anyone would be able to understand the article. This article will be used to display a subjective writing style in the dental field.

3)  http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1678-77572018000100440&lng=en&tlng=en

The last article I will be using is similar to the first article. It is a lab report which would be an academic writing. The language is very formal as well. The structure also follows a section by section style to show the different parts of the trial. I will use this as a follow up of how much time goes into dental clinical trial writings.

Major writing 1 assignment.

The analytical report is trying to help the writer understand the types of writings and genres they will see in their field of study. Understanding the genres of writing in their field will help the writer have a better understanding of their profession. In the past, I have written papers similar to analytical reports. I was asked to understand a topic through articles and other research. After learning the subject, I was asked to explain to the class my topic and help them understand it.

Q1: Does each individual academic or non-academic writing need to be different genres or just different genres between the two categories of writings we need to find?

Q2: Is the report supposed to be about our major or the field of work we are trying to go into?

Q3: Is the analytical report an informational paper?

What is rhetoric?

Rhetoric is the use and study of written, spoken, and visual languages. It finds out how language shapes social groups and creates knowledge. Examples of rhetoric include allusion, simile, and personification.
