Outline

Title: Gen eds should be taken away from the University of Iowa
Purpose Statement: Persuade my audience that general education requirements should not be required to graduate college
Thesis: College students are not benefiting from gen eds

Intro: College is a time in an individuals life where they are making their own choices and starting to become adults. To get to this point in their academic careers, students have gone through roughly 12 years of schooling. this has developed them into well-educated individuals before heading off to college. Also, college is very costly. Students should be able to decide what they spend their money on.

Body 1: Gen eds waste time and money

  • 37 credits required for gen eds
  • Getting rid of them could reduce college costs
  • Cost a lot of extra money for unrelated courses
Body 2: They are mostly unrelated to the students major or career
  • Science majors taking art or history classes
Body 3: College kids have been taking similar classes all their lives
  • Grade school and high school have required classes similar to gen eds.
  • Should have a choice if they want to take them or not
Conclusion: Although on paper gen eds sound like a good idea, it is actually costing students a lot of time and money. The classes they are required to take are mostly no use to them in their careers. They have also taken many similar classes in high school, even grade school.

Solution: Colleges should not require students to take gen eds

  • Have more major related courses
  • Make them optional
Justification:

  • Some students may not have taken them in high school
    • That is why they should be optional so those kids can take the courses
  • Some of these classes may benefit students in their careers even though it may not seem like it.
    • Even if some courses may benefit students career, the majority most likely won't so the students should decide if they want to take a certain gen ed or not.
  • The lack of courses in college may make students less knowledgeable.
    • Colleges should require more related courses in their field which could actually make them a better professional in their career.
  • What about students without a major?
    • Give them a schedule with a wide variety of courses to help them figure out what they want to do
Comments:
  • Some gen eds may be affecting GPA because students may be pushing gen eds in the back to do good in their major classes.

Topic Proposal

Every college student enrolled in a university is required to take courses called "gen eds." These are general education courses. Students are required to take these classes to become a well-rounded individual; however, these classes may be looked at as a waste of time and money. These courses are very similar to ones taken in high school, so why would students have to take them again? I propose that gen ed requirements should be taken out of college degree requirements. I believe this because students could be using their time and money to take more classes to prepare them for their career.

Speech 2

After reading the speech outline, I believe this speech is going to be proposing how to fix a problem. This problem can be anything such as parking at the university. After we introduce the problem, we are going to start talking about how we can start to resolve the issue. Instead of saying many different types of solutions, talk about the main argument for how to change the problem. The argument for change we propose has to has strong evidence. One question I have is should the visual have some sort of statistics?
